Why You Have to Take A Vacation - to See the Big Picture

Best Vacation EverI just got back from a weeklong cruise to Montego Bay in Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel Mexico.  It was a great vacation and I really wish I was still there, but I guess I have to come back to reality and resume my life now.

While on vacation, I decided that I would unplug completely - no computer, no Internet, no email, no cell phone or text messages or anything else that connects me with the world.  These days it seems like a good number of people are staying connected in some way - although that trend seems to be slowly changing.  I will admit that there were a few times that I worried that I would miss something important or miss out on some big news, but overall it was a great feeling to just be able to enjoy some time away.

So what did I learn from this experience and this vacation?  I learned that EVERYONE should try this out, and just get away from it all for a few days, a week or longer if needed.

The major thing that I found was that I was able to still think about work, but I was removed from the day to day and administrative tasks that take up a lot of or our daily time.  Without having these small and often repetitive tasks such as checking emails, I was able to see the big picture.

As an Internet marketer, you need to be able to think up new ideas, come up with grand plans for new clients, and be able to think outside the proverbial box.  Vacation allowed me to do this.  No more worrying about link anchor text, analytics data, or the many other things that piece together to create a well performing campaign.  I was able to come up with new ideas, strategies and plans that I plan on implementing that will yield great results for me and my clients going forward.

Vacation is good for many reasons, but for anyone who wants to clear their mind and focus on the big picture, I highly recommend that you take some time away, unplug from your technology devices and think outside the box.

So far, my mind clearing vacation has yielded great results as today we (Franklin-Spirko Marketing in Dallas) had the pleasure of partnering with Trump University as our newest client.  It will be a great experience working with the Trump organization and helping to promote their real estate training and other wealth creation business courses.

On the flip side, if you go on vacation for too long, you'll forget all your passwords.

Then you look stupid calling up tech support to get them to reset everything for you.

The family and I went down to the Lake of the Ozarks in MO this summer for vacation. I went nuts because the place we were staying at only had dial-up connections.

I can see getting away for a 3 or 4 day weekend, but anything more than that and I'll go crazy.

JD - Very true about the forgetting aspect. I had quite a few things that I wish I had bookmarked or written down, because the extended vacation did seem to erase some of the work memory ;)

Hi Mark,

i agree with this sentiment entirely, it definately works. You've got a nice blog here too, refreshing to see new content and real opinion not just regurgitated story!
