Find Out Where Users Click on Your Website Using Crazy Egg
If you haven't heard of Crazy Egg, I suggest you take a look and sign up for a free account. Crazy Egg allows you to create tests so you can learn what visitors are doing on your web pages by simply installing some javascript code on the page you want to track.
The data is then presented in a very easy to read reporting interface. It allows you to view a heatmap of exactly where each visitor clicked on a certain page, showing you what areas of a page draw the most attention. Once you view these reports, you can change the layout of your page to increase desired user actions. Crazy Egg allows you to:
- Test different versions of a page to see which works better
- Discover which ad placement gives the best results
- Find out which design encourages visitors to click deeper
- Learn which content leads to improved sales
They also just added a new feature that gives you even more advanced reporting. Their confetti view allows you to sort out each click based on referrer or other data. So if I only want to see how users that came from, let's say, a banner ad I have on a site, I can have it show me only clicks from that site. This is an awesome addition to an already great tool.
Here are screen shots of the heat tracking and confetti reporting views:
I use Crazy Egg on every site I manage, because the data it gives is just too valuable not to collect. Google Analytics has a similar feature of tracking which links are clicked on by whom, but it doesn't nearly compare with the data that Crazy Egg gives to you. Check it out - I am sure you will not regret it.

Thanks for this very useful information Mark. I have a website that has good traffic but a very few conversions, i think Crazy Egg can solve this problem.

This is awesome! I've used Click Density which is similar and loved it. However, I had some issues with the clicks not lining up exactly with the right areas. Have you experienced this with Crazy Egg?

@Christine-
I experienced the problem that you mention with Google Analytics and that is what led me to Crazy Egg. I do not see any of these problems using Crazy Egg and am very pleased with the reporting they have.
I have never used Click Density so I don't know the pros and cons between the two but I will check it out and probably do a post on my findings. Thanks!

I've been meaning to give CE a try for awhile, and I think your post might have been just what I needed to start test driving it ;)

Seems like a nice tool. Google Analytics does them all allready, though.

@Perde
Google Analytics does not have the same features that Crazy Egg has. Analytics only shows which links get clicked. They don't show where in the link that someone clicked not do they have the heatmaps or other features.
Knowing WHERE your users click exactly makes a big difference. If I have an image that is very large and has three different areas that are getting clicked, I want to know what is drawing them in so that I can try to emulate that in other ways on my site.
I also can't tell using Google's site overlay what the referrer is of every click on a page. This is also great information that can show you how people from one site such as Google click compared to traffic coming from an email blast.
This is a free tool that I highly suggest you check out to see the differences.

I'm in the same boat as a lot of people I guess. I have heard a lot about CE, have been meaning to give it a try, but haven't.
I will soon though!

Thanks for pointing out Crazy Egg. I'll definitely check it out. I just hate to add ANOTHER line of javascript code to the site in order to track something else.
But, you have a point--they way they show it is different than what you can get on Google Analytics. At the same time, ClickTracks does some of this, too.

I have CrazyEgg a try and blogged about the results.
Being able to visualise the actions of your visitors is a fantastic way of really getting to understand how they interact with your website.
Having access to such data allows you to tweak and improve your site in response to the way visitors use it.
I wasn't aware of the confetti feature though, so may well have to take another look!

Wow, the last time I used crazyegg was back in 2006. It looks like they've done some great improvements since then. I'll have to check it out again.

Wow Crazy Egg looks good, so will definitely check it out too :-)
I use Google Analytics for trend analysis and Clicky mostly for real-time stats. I would recommend it to any blogger as it gives you a real good insight to what is happening on your blog right NOW. When I have written a good article and submitted it to some social news and bookmarking sites it comes in very handy to check the activity and intermediate results.
